Beauty salon website design - what should a salon website have?

I design all kinds of websites. I don’t specialize in one particular industry. As a lover of variety, I think I’d get bored sticking to one industry only. That said, I do tend to get contacted by the businesses within the same realm. This is fairly common. I assume this is what happens:

  1. A new website is needed for a business

  2. They begin researching, surfing the Net for inspiration and ideas

  3. They come across websites they really like

  4. They contact the web designer of that site to design a site for them

Not rocket science. There are several specific industries this seems to happen with for me, and one of them is beauty salons.

Which is funny because I can probably count on both hands the number of times I’ve been in a beauty salon in my adult life.

I cut my own hair with kitchen scissors and—after having tried every color and style in previous years—now prefer my natural blonde. I’m also just not into most trends like the thick defined eyebrow (again, mine are blonde). So there isn’t much to be maintained. I can do it all at home, no problem.

But I digress. As a web designer (and DIY hair & beauty maintenance person), I have designed several websites for beauty salons, and I’ve found I really enjoy it. Not to mention, the sites end up very beautiful!

So I wanted to share those with you today and talk about some key features I feel a successful and impressive salon website should have.

Key Features of a successful salon website:

what should a salon website include?

a Compelling home page

From powerful and succinct intro sentences to encapsulate what you’re all about, to solid testimonials from clients providing social proof, your homepage is often your first impression in the online world. Learn how to make it good with this article I wrote: What Should You Include on the Homepage of Your Website? Check out the homepage of this website I designed for a beauty salon in Texas.

High-quality images

As a beauty salon, your website must have strong VISUAL appeal. The photos you select should not only show what you can do service-wise, but should provide inspiration to your visitors to contact you and book a service. If you do this right—i.e. hire a professional photographer to come into your salon and get shots of you and your team, the setting, and the work you do—then visitors to your site won’t be able to resist calling you to book their beauty service :)

A comprehensive services page + prices

To save everyone’s time and make this a lot easier, it’s important that a beauty salon website be sure to include a complete list of services. I also recommend including pricing with the services. Why wouldn’t you? Otherwise, you’re going to waste a lot of time on phone calls asking you the cost of this, that, and the other. It helps you and your clientele by just featuring all of this publicly on your website. Not to mention, the transparency builds trust. You can see great examples of Services pages for salon websites here and here.

Reviews + Testimonials

Testimonials and reviews are gold when it comes to social currency. They will make or break your business. And when people are looking to buy a new product or purchase a service, especially something as important to them as their appearance, they want to know that people like you and that you’re good at what you do. I recommend sprinkling client testimonials throughout your website on every single page, but go a step further and dedicate an entire page of your site to testimonials/reviews. Here and here are examples of testimonial pages I’ve designed for salon websites.

Blog!

Blogging will not only help people by offering valuable content, but it will get your site noticed and it will position you as an expert in your field. This is important: You can design, or have designed for you, the most beautiful website in existence, but it will be a complete waste if no one finds it. How do people find it? With SEO and SEO-driven blogging. If you do not fully understand this, please, do yourself a favor and enroll in this course BEFORE you design your website. Here is an example of a client who is building her blog after purchasing my web design + SEO service for her salon business and following the blogging instructions I provided. This is a big part of the reason her website traffic is going up, up, up, too! SEO blogging is crucial for website success.

show yourself

The Internet is two-dimensional. But as humans, having a three-dimensional experience, we love the human element. We want to know who is behind these flat websites, who is the real flesh and blood person we’ll be interacting with? So be sure to add photos of you/your team/your salon/etc. See the ABOUT pages of these salon businesses for ideas here, here, and here.

Make it clear how to get in touch / book with you

Last but not least, you want to make it obvious how to get in touch and/or book a service with you. Make it easy for visitors to do this. Provide all of your contact info, include your address, phone, and email. Additionally, create a CONTACT page with a form they can fill out and send to you. Design that form to be as clear as possible, requesting all of the info you might need from them to streamline the process. Place a contact or book button on every single page of your site. Provoke the visitors to connect as often as possible (without being annoying or cheesy).
